The pace of activities at our clients’ offices the past few months belies the traditional notion that summer is the “slow period” in the legal community. Our congratulations go out to Robert Brun Q.C. of the Vancouver law firm Harris & Brun who was named the 85th National President of the Canadian Bar Association during the mid-august Canadian Legal Conference in Vancouver.
Victoria-based personal injury law firm Acheson Whitley Foley & Sweeney recently achieved a $13 million settlement for a Central Saanich girl who suffered severe brain injuries after being shaken by her foster mother’s boyfriend as a baby. This is the largest award for a single injured person in British Columbia’s history. You can learn more about this Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) case on the firm’s blog.
Surrey-based multi-practice firm McQuarrie Hunter LLP recently presented $50,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. A portion of the donation will be used to fund the RCH’s new Multipurpose Interventional Suite. McQuarrie Hunter has proudly supported the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation for many years.

The Vancouver based litigation firm Fowler and Smith recently bid a fond farewell to their offices in the historic Marine Building. You can find their new offices at the corner of West Hastings and Seymour.
Skunkworks recently assisted the Vancouver multi-practice firm Watson Goepel in the creation of a new website. The website features new branding designed to give the firm a cleaner, modern identity.
Joe McStravick of the multi-practice firm DBM successfully represented a client who had been injured in a car accident while not wearing a seatbelt. The judge found that the defendant was not partially liable for the accident even though he had neglected to fasten the safety device. You can read more about the case here. DBM also recently launched the TaxApp for Google smartphones and iPhones that can be used by realtors and homeowners to help calculate taxes that are relevant to the buying and selling of a home.
The Vancouver based personal injury firm Murphy Batista recently released a new Car Accident App for iPhone and Car Accident App for Android. The accident App can be used to take notes at the scene of an accident, quickly contact emergency services and an invaluable FAQ section contain important information about the appropriate procedures to follow when involved in a motor vehicle accident.
Vancouver Lawyer Murray Rankin, Q.C. was recently hired to advise the B.C. NDP in their attempts to challenge the establishment of Enbridge’s Proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline. You can read more about the case and Mr. Rankin’s involvement here.
The Environmental Law Centre, headed by Chris Tollefson, was recently hired to Represent Wildlife Conservation Groups as the Northern Gateway Review enters its final stages. The University of Victoria’s Environmental Law Centre will be working to ensure that the interests of birds and wildlife are well represented in the final stage of hearings this Fall.
If that’s the slow period, we can’t wait to see what September holds in store.
